Mark, Reijer and I went to the Jitsvinger & ETC performance at 14 Hope Street last night. the venue isn’t the best for MCs since it’s a hall and it makes the sound bounce around and echo and you don’t get to hear the best of what they’re saying, but it was an energetic performance no less. partially charged by the energy of the ardent fans who were clearly there to recite every lyric word for word, the rest of the crowd was a strange mix. in fact, there was a granny who outdid everybody in terms of stamina and enthusiasm when it came to dancing. to me it seemed like a mix of family and close friends, made up by a bunch of youngsters i didn’t recognise, which is not something that usually happens in Cape Town.
Mark and I were hypothesizing that if we didn’t recognise anyone, it can’t be populated by the usual advertising crowd, therefore maybe Levi’s was actually reaching its market? rather have fewer on targets (the hall wasn’t even half full) than lots that miss the target. quality over quantity. got some pics:
jitsvinger

crowd:

ETC:

jitsvinger, moments before he mimicked pulling a gun on me. seriously. freaking artists:

shoes styles:

sound wall:

huge cuervo presence at the bar, with brands like Bell’s Whisky (WTF? Demographic brain freeze perhaps?), Smirnoff Spin, Storm, Heinekin and Windhoek bringing up the rear.

the venue:

more crowd vibes

Something i’ve been dying to blog about for a while is that we’ll be running Pecha Kucha Nights in Cape Town, and the date for the first event is set at 17 June 2008. this is super exciting – sharing ideas, passion and inspiration is something we try to do as much as we can, and something we started doing with IG Assembly, which we held 2 months ago. we’re going to let that go gently and take over custodianship of an internationally successful platform – Pecha Kucha is growing all the time in cities all over the world.
we’ve got a few things to knuckle down, mainly the venue, as we need somewhere that’s not too big but not too small either, since we’ll need to have space to project the talks. for those of you who’d like to get involved, i’ve started a group on facebook which you can join to be kept updated. otherwise go to the the official site and drop us a mail. we’re still establishing speakers so you’re welcome to submit yourself if you want to show your work. just be sure to stick to the 20 slides at 20 seconds each guideline.
we’ll need to receive your presentation by the 16th of June as well so we can line up all the work.
so yay. for those of you who love design and creativity, this is something you’re not going to want to miss. best of all, it’s free. xx

some graf found in gardens. believe it’s the work of milkitost.

and then i found this on my phone, took it at gardens centre around Easter time. would you not be frightened to death of this if you were a kid? looks like it’s about 50 years old.

so we had a IG writer’s dinner to welcome some new grasses and get to know some of our current grassing superstars. we made a lot of noise and annoyed our waitress at Bacini thoroughly. Amu, our regional manager if Jozi and the new producer on Sbu’s morning show on YFM, managed to make it down to spend some time with us, too.

it was also Jacky’s birthday. Jacky helps us out all the time. we’re not sure why, but it must be out of the goodness of her heart. so we threw her a little party at the office with some fantastic carrot cake from Limnos, and we gave her this T-shirt. we know she’s been waiting for it all her life.

and then this is just a rad hoody i found on Ricky Lee’s back. Ricky runs a super cool company called Word of Art, as well as a clothing label you might have heard of called Muthaland. he also has a company called writeonafrica, which does commission based graffiti.

Cape Union Mart’s come out with a fleece made purely from recycled materials.

Visi magazine released a biodegradable shopping bag:

these recycled notebooks are made by the Remarkable company, and you can get them at the Wellness Centres springing up around town:

YDE has some recycled shoppers too:

Vida e caffe gets its green on:

The Grid is the new location-based social networking application for your cellphone. if you’re not on it, go to www.onthegrid.com to check it out. i’ve been seeing these little orange stickers all around town and managed ot get a few close-ups – pretty similar to the blips (virtual notes) you can leave around town on the grid.

in Green Point. Fantastic sandwiches and some delicious lebanese food too. plus it looks stunning. you’ll find it in Hudson Street, de Waterkant. I recommend the Black Forest Ham and Emmenthaler on rye. it’s not just a restaurant, but also a boutique clothing store where you can get your hands on Blue Blood jeans – a brand cofounded by the same guy who brought Evisu jeans from Japan to Europe.

so i made the most of the 2 day week 2 weeks ago, took leave and headed to struisbaai and arniston. a road trip in South Africa ain’t a road trip unless you stop at a farm stall. in this instance, the Moerse Farm Stall in Napier caught our eye. some snaps:

we found this very pretty ice cream truck in arniston, colour coordination a pure coincidence:

and ate a pint of prawns at the arniston hotel – highly recommended:

we also found the SunTouched Inn, which reads a bit like SunDouched Inn:
