reflecting on some good times

like i said, i’m going to miss jupiter. this whole missing-something has got me thinking about all the good times i had here in my practically lifelong 4 months career i spent on this advertising planet. :

– dialling the interkom and then setting off Brandt’s fart machine during the 3pm slump

– planting the fart machine at farewell speeches near the person who’s leaving

– planting the fart machine under the mike during the Good Hope FM broadcast

– strapping the fart machine to Nicole and following her around the office with the remote

– making giant cut-outs of Jason’s head and carrying them around Margate at the Loerie Awards

– taking the giant cut-out of Jason’s head to agency lunches and not inviting Jason

– giving my Traffic Manager Sarah all my lunch scraps

– framing a pic of an erect penis, putting it on Fred’s desk and waiting a whole day for him to notice

– moving the framed penis to the design studio and watching Jo notice the penis while showing a client around  and pulling a quick ‘hey look over there’ while pointing in opposite direction

– planting the framed penis on the new guy’s desk and watching him say nothing about it for fear of ‘being uncool’

– sending out an email from Traffic Manager’s machine saying ‘I am randy’ and then her dumping the contents of her rubbish bin on my desk while client looked on, fearful

such crazy, zany times y’ulle. do you ever get scared that you will never be able to replicate the level of craziness you have achieved elsewhere? like, what if the model doesn’t work unless atmospheric conditions are just right? being a creative is like being a weird tropical fish that swims backwards or something. the water needs to have plenty of that blue droppy stuff in it, the temperature must be complimentary to scale growth, the tank must be cleaned every 2 – 3 weeks. failing that, regular hugs and maybe a tot of good whisky every now and again will do.

>>>Maybe i’m just thinking too hard about moving jobs and i need to chill out and listen to Cat Power.  <<<

weekly roundup: my amazing life

yes, my life is amazing, it could even be compared to that of an international glamour model – one who likes to hide her hot body from everyone in case her friends got jealous and stabbbed her with their cuticle sticks. last friday the Jupiter drinks were themed Never Gonna Give Quirky Mexi Up (actually was something like Cinco Amigas) and we had a Pinata named Jason (after the highly respected Jason Yankelowitz):

My name is Jason Yankelowitz. I am a unicorn. BreeeEEeeee!

great for releasing Friday frustrations built up by being in a recording studio for the whole of thursday. I generally love recording but this must be the longest project i’ve worked on – a good 5 minutes long, whereas i’m more used to 30 second radio ads. anyhow i hooked up with Herman from Milestone who is an absolute dream to work with, so it wasn’t too bad. plus the new Milestone studios are looking so super cool.

then renee had a drinks thing at her iPod flat ( it really does look like an iPod, it’s so white it’s impossible to get a photo that isn’t blurred – what follows is one of the few). We drank JWBL and climbed into the SingStar, until the boys monopolised it and the girls had to sit around chatting in the kitchen.

spent the rest of the weekend relaxing, taking it eeeeeeeaaaaaaassssssaaaaaayyy. did a fair bit of running and we even attempted a spring clean. Rei moved his whole room around, I unpacked 2 boxes, which isn’t really springcleaning. but i tried. saturday was the most amazing sunny weather so i attempted to sit by the pool and even dived in but got a severe ice-cream-headache. here is a pic of Rei being King of the Kitchen ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

Sunday marked my ONE MONTH SMOKE FREE anniversary ********bigachievement*********. That means i don’t smell like ash the whole time and I won’t end up looking like the Chupacabra —> NY Times described ‘pox on humanity’ (such a great article, worth reading).

I can haz medal.

Kathi, Paige and I did the Virgin Active Indoor Triathlon last weekend. This is the first triathlon I have ever done, which is why I am impressed by my 25 min 41 second timing for 2km running, 5km cycling and 125m swimming. The event was really well put together and loads of fun – I’ll definitely be doing the next one.

James and the Giant Penis.

James and the Giant Penis.

Last Friday’s drinks at the agency was themed ‘Cool as Ice’ and featured Vanilla Ice being blared over the loudspeaker, as well as the carving of a giant penis. The penis was carved live in front of everyone in about 30 minutes, and a clear hole runs through the middle of it so you can pour tequila down the top and put your mouth at the bottom. It kind of made everyone look like hamsters licking at their water bottle. I stress ‘kind of’.

Enough glee to last a week.

childhood friend of mine, Sam King, stopped over to spend the weekend with me before she headed back to Korea where she is teaching English. she brought me this Polaroid One600 and 2 packs of film to get me going – which made me so excited I basically couldn’t blog for a week. she also got me some other cool things, namely:

The latest installment in the Choo Choo stationary series - La La La Mona Lisa Choo Choo journal. LOVES it!

Korean cigarettes - lovely to look at since am no longer smoking.

then we bade a sad farewell to longtime designer here and dear friend of mine, Carla Kreuser, who heads off to Coley Porter Bell (the S. African branch, still very new). we went to Col’Caccio and ate pizza and drank tequila in the sunshine.

ever wish there was more than one of you?

hire him to stand in queues for you / pick up your washing / take your dog to the vet / read to your blind mother.

now you can make that wish a reality. i hope this company gets very rich off the generally low standards of service in SA. way to go, guys.

The Loerie Awards 2008

wow. i have to say, i am impressed. from ramshackle seaside event to slick sunny extravaganza, The Loerie Awards finally grew into all its potential this time round. i think one’s experience of the awards depends on a number of factors, including where you’re staying, who you’re with, etc. This year we stayed slap bang in the middle of Margate in the flats about the Rondevoux Mall, which made access to shops, the beach and ceremony exceptionally easy, and thus we had a great weekend. the weather in Margate was sheer perfection – not muggy, very sunny and the water was warm and swimmable, so i managed to fit in a mini seaside holiday in the off-time. the rest of the time was spent catching up with people i haven’t seen in ages, which is a large part of what makes going so much fun. here are some of my pics, i will add a few more later. oh, and here’s the link to the saturday winners and the sunday winners.

before we left, we made a whole bunch of enlarged Jason faces. Jason works with us in client service, and in his spare time he is a paramedic and a bit of a dork. we like to make fun of the fact that he never doesnt pull a blue steel face in photos. we also like to make fun of his Safety First policy.

We even got Jason to stop freaking out long enough to embrace his faces in a totem pole formation.

Digital won a whole bunch of awards on Saturday night, which made people say things like We really need to get into digital,. Hmm. Rather late than never, I guess.

I was really impressed by the various screens on the stage. A vast improvement from just 2 screens with a barely legible powerpoint presentation on it. This actually looked good, and you could see the work, which is what we were there for, after all.

Arguably the biggest awards (Television Grand Prix) went to King James for the Allan Gray ad, Beautiful. I think they deserved it.

This is an action shot I managed to capture during our Friday night braai in Margate. At some point someone threw breadrolls, which resulted in a fully fledged food fight. Here we have a precious shot of the tomatoes landing on Michaels head.
